Mastering Existence and Possession in Korean
In Korean, expressing whether something exists or whether you have something is fundamental to daily conversations. This lesson covers how to say “There is” or “I have” using 있어요 and how to say “There isn’t” or “I don’t have” using 없어요. Plus, we'll learn how to describe the location of objects using 에.

Grammar Focus: Expressing Existence and Possession
To express whether something exists or whether you own something, use:
🔹 Subject + 있어요 (There is / I have)
- 아이폰 있어요. (There is an iPhone. / I have an iPhone.)
- 히렌 씨는 노트북이 있어요. (Hiren has a laptop.)
- 저는 언니가 있어요. (I have an older sister.)
🔹 Subject + 없어요 (There isn’t / I don’t have)
- 오늘 수업 없어요. (There is no class today.)
- 여기 사람이 없어요. (There is no one here.)
- 미나 씨는 친구가 없어요. (Mina has no friends.)
💡 Note:
- 있어요 = Something exists / Someone has something.
- 없어요 = Something does not exist / Someone does not have something.

Talking About Locations: Using '에'
In Korean, the particle 에 is used for locations, meaning “at,” “in,” or “on.”
🔹 Structure: Subject + Location + 에 + 있어요 / 없어요
- 수현 씨는 집에 있어요. (Suhyun is at home.)
- 가방에 노트북이 있어요. (There’s a laptop in the bag.)
- 책상에 선물이 있어요. (There’s a gift on the desk.)
- 학교에 선생님이 없어요. (There is no teacher at school.)
💡 Tip: The order of location and subject is flexible:
- 학교에 선생님 있어요? (Is there a teacher at school?)
- 선생님이 학교에 있어요? (Is the teacher at school?)
