Pronouns: λ‚˜ β†’ μ €, 우리 β†’ 저희

The number 1 rule of Korean honorifics is β€œalways make/put yourself lower”.

You have to use the humble form μ € instead of λ‚˜, and 저희 instead of 우리. These are the most common honorific pronouns. You have to use these words when you talk to someone older than you, or to show respect to the listener.

λ‚˜ I/meβ†’ μ € 우리 usβ†’ 저희 λ‚˜λŠ” κΉ€μˆ˜ν˜„μ΄λΌκ³  ν•΄.

I am Suhyun. (I am called Suhyun.) β†’ μ €λŠ” κΉ€μˆ˜ν˜„μ΄λΌκ³  ν•©λ‹ˆλ‹€.

우리 νšŒμ‚¬λŠ” 3측에 μžˆμ–΄. Our company is located on the third floor. β†’ 저희 νšŒμ‚¬λŠ” 3측에 μžˆμŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€.

Forms of address: λ‹˜, 씨 λ‹˜ and 씨 are titles you can use when you need to address someone.

λ‹˜ is the highest form of honorifics. It can be roughly translated as Mister or Madam in English. This suffix is used with people’s names and titles.

Like λ£©μ‹œ λ‹˜, κ°€λžŒ λ‹˜. Also λ‹˜ can be added to job titles. What is a teacher in Korean? Yes, it’s μ„ μƒλ‹˜. You may also heard μ„ λ°°λ‹˜, someone who is older than you in school or work, 사μž₯λ‹˜, president of a company, and κΈ°μ‚¬λ‹˜, the driver.

On the other hand, 씨 is used to address people that are on the same level of the social status. They may be slightly older or younger than you, but you’re at the same social level.

For example your colleague or your classmate.

씨 is attached after the full name, such as κΉ€μˆ˜ν˜„ 씨, or simply after the first name μˆ˜ν˜„ 씨.

였늘 λˆ„κ°€ κ²°μ„ν–ˆμ§€? Who is absent today? μ„ μƒλ‹˜, μˆ˜ν˜„ 씨가 κ²°μ„ν–ˆμ–΄μš”. Sir/Ma’am, μˆ˜ν˜„ is absent today. μ•ˆλ…•ν•˜μ„Έμš”, μ–΄λ””λ‘œ κ°ˆκΉŒμš”? Particles: 이/κ°€ β†’ κ»˜μ„œ, μ—κ²Œ/ν•œν…Œ β†’ 께 Korean language can index deference or respect toward someone by using honorific particles. We learned the subject markers 이/κ°€ before, simply change 이/κ°€ to κ»˜μ„œ. For example, if you want to refer to what your teacher does, you have to say μ„ μƒλ‹˜κ»˜μ„œ, not μ„ μƒλ‹˜μ΄. μ—κ²Œ/ν•œν…Œ are the dative particles, mainly used for someone to whom you are giving something. μ—κ²Œ is the formal form and ν•œν…Œ is the informal form. And 께 is the honorific form. 이/κ°€ β†’ κ»˜μ„œ μ—κ²Œ/ν•œν…Œ β†’ 께 μ„ μƒλ‹˜κ»˜μ„œ μΆœμ„μ„ λΆˆλŸ¬μš”. The teacher calls the roll. λΆ€λͺ¨λ‹˜κ»˜ μ „ν™”ν–ˆμ–΄μš”. I gave a phone call to my parents. Verbs/Adjectives: -μ‹œ-, -μœΌμ‹œ- To show your respect to the person you are speaking to, you have to add -μ‹œ- or -μœΌμ‹œ- to verbs and adjectives. You can add -μ‹œ- to word stems ending in a vowel and -μœΌμ‹œ- to stems ending in a consonant. For example κ°€λ‹€, which means to go, changes to κ°€μ‹œλ‹€ and κ±·λ‹€, which means to walk, changes to κ±ΈμœΌμ‹œλ‹€. Some verbs change totally from their original form, let’s talk about them later.
