Mastering 'This', 'That', and Ownership in Korean
When learning Korean, understanding how to describe objects and express possession is essential. Whether you’re asking, “What is this?” or saying, “This is my book,” these phrases will help you navigate everyday conversations with ease.
Essential Vocabulary
Before diving into sentence structures, let’s look at some key vocabulary words:
- 이것 (igeot) – This
- 그것 (geugeot) – That (near the listener)
- 저것 (jeogeot) – That (far from both the speaker and listener)
- 책 (chaek) – Book
- 공책 (gongchaek) – Notebook
- 연필 (yeonpil) – Pencil
- 펜 (pen) – Pen
- 가방 (gabang) – Bag
- 모자 (moja) – Hat
These words will form the foundation of our grammar practice.
Grammar Focus: Asking About Objects
In Korean, the way you ask “What is this?” depends on the object’s location:
🔹 If the object is near you:
이게 뭐예요? (What is this?)
🔹 If the object is near the listener:
그게 뭐예요? (What is that?)
🔹 If the object is far from both people:
저게 뭐예요? (What is that over there?)
Examples:
- 이게 뭐예요? (What is this?) / 이것은 책이에요. (This is a book.)
- 그게 뭐예요? (What is that?) / 그것은 연필이에요. (That is a pencil.)
-
저게 뭐예요? (What is that over there?) / 저것은 가방이에요. (That is a bag.)
Talking About Possessions
When expressing ownership, we use 저의 (jeoui) for “my” in a polite setting, and 나의 (naui) or 내 (nae) in casual speech.
🔹 Structure: Possessor + 의 + Object + 예요/이에요
- 제 가방이에요. (It’s my bag.)
- 엄마의 시계예요. (It’s my mom’s watch.)
- 선생님의 다이어리예요. (It’s the teacher’s diary.)
For casual conversations:
- 내 공책이에요. (It’s my notebook.)
- 수현 씨의 모자예요. (It’s Suhyun’s hat.)
💡 Grammar Tip:
- If the object ends in a consonant, use 이에요.
- If the object ends in a vowel, use 예요.
Practice:
- Translate: “This is my pen.” → ______
- How do you say: “That is Andrew’s computer.” → ______
- Fill in the blank: “이것은 ______예요.” (This is a notebook.).
